The First Pastry Shop in The Old City Core Recommended by SFD

The pastry shop Sugar&Spice got the Dubrovnik Slow Food Convivium recommendation for the 2012. The pastry shop Sugar&Spice among Dubrovnik people known as "At Gaby's", is an excellent example of how traditional and modern gastro treats can be combined.

The philosophy of this shop is based on apparently contradictory principles such as "a little gives a lot" and "new tastes remind of old ones". With a varied offer and particular atmosphere Sugar&Spice links Dubrovnik to the global trends in gastronomy. Its small harmonious interior is furnished only with recycled furniture and decorated with traditional needlework made by the owner's mother giving the place a cosy home atmosphere.

The daily offer consists of a small number of pastries which guarantees their freshness. For their making only Croatian products are being used with no artificial aromas. The hit cake in Gaby's offer is a carob and orange cake, made of locally produced ingredients, a little pepper and is gluten free. Fruit cakes and jams are made with unsprayed fruit of the season. The original product in this shop is a juice made of wild sage picked on the slopes of Peljesac, seasoned with a sprinkle of home grown lemon juice. Their future offer will include a lavender cake, a fig pie as well as mashed fruit ice-cream. Sugar&Spice offers also some salted products such as bread made with olives or dried tomatoes, onion or zucchini.

This pastry shop offers also products from a small farm from Majkovi: awarded olive oil, traditional pickles, jams and liqueurs made of olives and unfermented grape juice. In this way Gaby tries to help the local traditional farming. In Sugar&Spice you can also buy knitted and crochet made souvenirs as well as all you need for serving cakes and all these products are made by local artists.
